Yo Rad Patrol! Check out my new song list: Martha Quinn’s Top Ten “Missing You” Songs. Except there’s 12. I can’t help it! We’re talking about a time when Radsterpieces were hitting the charts and our hearts. Which should I cut? Which should be #1???

This list came to me as, on this gray day in Malibu, I find myself looking through all the Facebook groups centered around the theme “I Miss MTV from the 80s”. 9,185 people clicked “like” for I Miss The Days When MTV Actually Used To Play Music Videos. 9,185!!! Sample post: “Really enjoyed the Teen Mom2 marathon yesterday…NOT.” Hahaha!

Let’s see what my Alma Mater’s up to: On MTV as I write this: Real World XXV Las Vegas. MTV2: Jersey Shore. But wait! MTV “Iggy” seems to be about music. “Breaking boundaries in Music Television”… oh. It’s online only.

The truth is, even if MTV played music videos 24/7, it still wouldn’t be the MTV we long for. Being subjected to Cee Lo Green’s F**k You, or Rhianna’s S&M, or Ke$ha’s Blow…I highly doubt would soothe our souls.

What we miss is the excitement of the World Premiere Videos. We miss watching the video music artform take it’s first steps in the new world of synth pop, new romantics, hair bands, and hip-hop. We miss an MTV where music was IT. We didn’t need no stinkin’ reality shows, our minds were blown aplenty by Duran Duran, Michael Jackson, Def Leppard, Run DMC , The Police, The Go-Go’s and of course…Kajagoogoo. A-ha’s Take On Me soared as high as it’s notes in our consciousness. Snooki wouldn’t have stood a chance against such entrancement.

But eventually we grew used to Videos. They became old news. MTV, seeking the adrenaline of being loved by the young, grew restless with their beloved format and added Remote Control to the family. I used to joke with Ken Ober that he was personally responsible for MTV’s downfall. Remote Control, Real World, and whatever that Tila Tequila shindig was. It was over Johnny, our golden age had concluded it’s broadcasting day.

*Sniff* But MTV of yore…I Remember You! Skid Row. I guess we really Don’t Know What It’s Got Until It’s Gone. Cinderella.

Peruse my “Missing You” list and tell me which tracks should hit the road, and which should be #1.

Xoxoxo, Martha
